Art Nouveau Poppy Hair Stick
$500.00 USD
Entirely hand-fabricated in sterling silver, this hair stick uses ancient forming techniques that saw a rise in popularity at the beginning of the 20th century in Europe. The Art Nouveau period of European art history is exemplified by people such as Czech artist Alphonse Mucha, and jeweller and glass artist René Lalique. It is characterized by elegant, flowing lines joining natural elements together in a complex and stylized manner.
The hair stick features a hand-formed poppy flower and a sweep of stylized stems and leaves. The elements achieve their three-dimensional form using repoussé, chasing, and etching. These techniques were favoured because they allow the hand of the artist to be felt in the final piece. The result is an elegant and playful take on my favourite period of art-making.
