Thought and Memory Necklace

Thought and Memory, and her sister necklace Hypatia's Dream, are the result of a collaboration between two artists and silversmiths: Sara Akl and Patricia Tozer. The pieces are designed to enhance Sara's gorgeous grisaille enamels.

About Sara's work:
Sara's enamel work is a meditation upon dreams, the sea, but most of all it is about her home Alexandria, and what it means to her.

Grisaille enamelling is an exacting, difficult, technical process whereby finely ground opalescent vitreous enamel is applied in many layers onto a dark background. It is a technique that is so exhaustive and demanding that few attempt it today. Sara has achieved beautiful results and we are so happy to be able to offer this to our patrons.

Patricia set Sara's beautiful piece in sterling and fine silver, a metal that shines like the sun upon the waves, and carries the energy of the enamel, radiating it up and out from the central focal point. For this particular piece, Patricia hoped to capture the idea of Memory, how home lives in the mind's eye, even when physically we are far away. We use all of our senses to create and recall memories. Sound, touch, and smell are particularly potent and this pendant aims to give the wearer multiple ways to access them. The brass drops make a gentle sound, identified by one friend as the recalling the sound of tiny seashells in her hand as a child, and by another as the sound of summer. On the back of the pendant is a small cage to hold something meaningful to the wearer ~ a note, a photo or a small piece of silk or cotton sprayed with a meaningful scent.

Many hours of love have been poured into every part of this unique piece of wearable art. We both hope you love it.
